CSEC & your first job
You don’t need a degree to start. For many entry roles, your CSEC subjects and grades are what employers look at first.
What the grades mean
CSEC (the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate) is set by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). Each subject is graded from Grade I (best) to Grade VI. Grades I, II and III are the passing grades employers usually mean when they say “a pass”.
| Grade | Usually read as |
|---|---|
| I | Pass — highest |
| II | Pass |
| III | Pass — the most common minimum |
| IV–VI | Not usually counted as a pass |
“Grade II or better” means Grade I or II is fine. “Grade III” on a job page also accepts I and II.
Subjects employers ask for most
- English A and Mathematics — asked for in most entry-level roles, from bank tellers to hotel front desks.
- Principles of Business, Principles of Accounts and Office Administration — common for finance, retail and administration.
- Information Technology, Integrated Science and Physics — common for technical and apprenticeship roles.
How Rolegrove uses them
- Job pages separate must-have subjects from nice-to-have ones, so you know what you can apply with.
- On the jobs page, add “My CSEC subjects” to see only jobs whose minimum subjects you already meet. That choice lives in the page link — it isn’t saved to a profile or shown to anyone.
- Missing a subject? Many employers also accept HEART/NSTA Trust NVQ-J or City & Guilds qualifications. Look for it under “Nice to have” or the CSEC notes on the job.
CAPE and other qualifications
CAPE (Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination) units, vocational certificates, licences and certifications all count — add them when you build a profile. Employers see only what you choose to share.
If you can’t find your results
Ask your school or CXC about a replacement or verification. Most employers will let you apply first and provide documents later; Rolegrove job pages say when results “can be added after applying”.
