Spot a job scam

Real employers don’t charge you to give you a job. If anything below sounds familiar, stop and check.

The golden rule: never pay to get a job — not for an “application fee”, “processing”, “uniform”, “training” or “visa”. Rolegrove never charges job seekers to search, save or apply.

Warning signs

  • It asks for money — fees, deposits, “refundable” payments, buying gift cards or sending mobile credit.
  • Overseas offers for work you never applied for, especially with “guaranteed” visas or jobs.
  • Chat-only recruiters. The “interview” happens entirely on WhatsApp or text, with no company email, address or website you can check.
  • Asks for bank details, your passport or ID photos before any offer. (Employers need your TRN and NIS number once you’re hired — not to apply.)
  • Pay that is too good to be true, or pressure to “reply today”.
  • Personal email addresses (Gmail, Yahoo…) for a large company, or a name that is almost — but not quite — a real company.

Checks before you apply

  • Look for the Verified employer badge — it means Rolegrove checked the business.
  • Source-linked means we found the ad elsewhere and linked to it. We say who the source is, and we haven’t necessarily verified the employer.
  • Check “Last confirmed active”. If we couldn’t confirm a job is still open, the page says so.
  • Search for the company’s own website and call a number you found yourself.

If something feels wrong

  1. Stop. Don’t send money, codes or documents.
  2. Report the listing — you’ll get a reference number and the employer is never told who reported.
  3. If you already paid or shared bank details, contact your bank straight away, and report it to the police (Jamaica Constabulary Force).
  4. Tell friends and family who might see the same offer.
